Polls Reveal Us to be Confused

Polls Reveal Us to be Confused 2015-01-01T15:00:03-07:00

On the one hand, the majority of Catholics have no problem with Obama at Notre Dame

On the other hand, the majority of American identify as “pro-life“–that would be the same Americans who voted for Obama.

I think such poll results probably indicate that most Americans think of themselves as Nice People, sort of like the person who says, “Hey! I’m not bloodthirsty. I don’t want to kill babies. But, of course, if a woman has, you know, a problem that she needs to take care of, I’m not going to say it’s wrong. Sometimes you have to do bad things in order for there to be a happy ending.”

That’s why I keep banging away at our deeply rooted consequentialism. Once the prolife movement embraces consequentialism when it comes to torture, it’s game over. They’ve given away the moral basis for opposition to abortion when they embrace the notion that you can do evil that good may come of it.
