Beats me

Beats me September 30, 2009

A reader asks:

Could you help me interpret some symbols on a painting of Jesus on the Cross. I recently purchased it and am curious.

On the top of the cross are 4 letters and 3 (Greek?) symbols.

It reads O – B – G -(reverse h) – T – (triangle) – (Z with a horizontal line through the middle)

By Jesus’s left wrist are two letters IC and His right wrist XC. I am sure this means Jesus but am use to IHC or IHS. The painter used ICXC instead of IHS. Does this give us some insight into the personality of the painter?

Faded in the back ground are 4 letters M P O V. I have seen that MP before but never thought about the meaning of it.

Thanks and no rush.

‘Fraid I don’t know. Anyone? Bueller?
