I thought nothing became his office so much as his leaving of it. But, still a massive narcissist, he couldn’t leave well enough alone: he had to write this book steeped in self-regard, score-settling, immaturity and, well, narcissism and wreck even that. It’s all about him. Now I fear “Weakland: The Rehab Tour!” will have to follow, in which he will figure out a way to make his grotesque failures the fault of John Paul, Benedict and a Church that Failed to Get with His Program. The Usual Blah Blah aided and abetted by the Usual Victims of Stockholm Syndrome who still give ready ear to the very people who betrayed them. We’ll see.
Please, Archbishop: go gently into that good night. You’ve done enough. As a member of the American laity, may I just plead: Stop liberating me.
