with a post I mostly agree with (except for the bit about how “we” take ideas and history seriously. I don’t see a lot of Americans taking history too seriously. If they did, the Da Vinci Code would never have been a best seller. Americans take TV seriously. Dr. King will soon be as digested into a five word slogan as Lincoln or Washington were and, when he has served his purpose, will likewise be forgotten or even discredited. Washington was “Father of our Country” for several generations. Now, he’s “white slave owner” and tossed on the rubbish heap. Lincoln was digested down to “He freed the slaves”. That’s still useful. But sooner or later, he will get tossed too. King will get digested down to “I have a dream” and then it will be a fairly easy matter to make his dream be whatever the social engineers happen to be dreaming of: abortions for everybody, a Safer America, whatever. Almost nobody in a generation or two will no any more details about his life than the average TV watcher knows about Salmon P. Chase, Aaron Burr, or Chester A. Arthur. How many Americans do *you* know who really pause to think about the Civil War dead who inspired the foundation of Memorial Day? How many Americans do you know who know why Veteran’s Day was founded? Or when Washington and Lincoln’s birthdays occurred?
