This remarkably illiterate art critic in the NY Times reminds me of a story from the late Fr. Richard John Neuhaus. It seems a college professor from the US was taking his students on a tour of the great museums of Europe. After seeing a wide array of medieval and Renaissance art, one of the students approach the teacher in high dudgeon and declared, “You can’t tell me these people weren’t deeply sexist!” The teacher asked what she meant and the student replied, “We’ve seen dozens of paintings of a woman holding a baby and in *every instance* the baby is a boy!”
