Br. Guy Consolmagno and Fr. Robert Spitzer attempt to teach the increasingly silly Stephen Hawking some elementary philosophy. I know Fr. Spitzer. He’s a pistol. An absolute vibrating fireball of primal intellectual energy (and loads of fun to listen to). Turns out that when you try to insist the universe created itself from nothing, you can’t smuggle in “because of the law of gravity” since that’s, you know, something. And you can’t answer the question “But why is there a law of gravity?” with the reply “Silence! I, Dr. Stephen Hawking, will have it so! Are you anybody?”
PS. A Thomist philosopher friend sent me an email yesterday that read, “Because there is such a law as gravity, we must have lunch this week.” Heh! And they say Thomism is short on laffs.
