How to Blog 2014-12-31T14:45:51-07:00

A reader writes:

I have been familiar with your blog and other work for close to ten years, and I appreciate the fact that you are still at it.

It appears that I am about to start a blog with the dual purposes of
(1) providing a place for me to publish reflections on Catholic poets and poetry, and perhaps bring a few of my own poems before readers, and
(2) providing a place for my wife, an artist, to make photographs of some of her paintings available online.

We are sort of an artistic team of words and pictures. I would manage the technical requirements, as I have some background with computers.

Would you have any recommendations for blog service providers, caveats, etc?

We are both Catholic and enjoying it, over 50, and mostly-retired to pursue art (hers) and writing (his).

How I envy you! Being able to retire is something I don’t anticipate ever being able to do, barring a miracle. Right now, we are praying hard for enough money to make the bills this month. As far as blogging goes, it’s really completely up to you. A blog has the look and feel you give it and takes as much energy as you feel like putting into it. I use Blogger, largely because I’m lazy and have never felt like changing since it works good enough for my largely text-based work. There are lots of other platforms that allow you to do all sorts of nifty graphics (about which I know nothing). I don’t have any big caveats beyond obvious stuff like “Don’t commit libel” and “Don’t make huge bandwidth demands on your readers. I’m told this blog is slow to load for some people. No idea why. I wish I had more to say, but that’s about it. Readers who blog may have ideas to add.
