I have a 12-year old girl that has ravenously devoured any scifi/fantasy she can get her hands on (makes a papa proud….). I’m looking for good, intelligent scifi/fantasy for a girl her age that isn’t overly sexualized. I remember most of the scifi that I read when younger (Stranger in a Strange Land!) had some of these themes and I’d like to avoid them. At the same time, I’m hesitant to look at much Christian SciFi because it ain’t often pretty. To give you a flavor of what she has read: Redwall (years ago), all LOTR + Hobbit and Silmarillion, a ton of Star Wars books, Enders Game and The Martian Chronicles.
Not having a girl, I don’t quite know what girls like, but I would suppose that there are recommended reading lists out there for that age group from reliable sources. Also, you might think about steering her toward other genres just to open things up a bit. She might be ready for a stab at Dickens or Louisa May Alcott. Readers, do you have some suggestions?
