…if these crooks are ever caught and punished. I doubt it, since quite a number of these crooks have cushy positions inside the government.

I do increasingly suspect that, should the economy *really* go south, people like this, both in the private sector and in our Ruling classes, will fleece us for all they can and then leave the ship to sink. I have no confidence–none–that our supposed public servants have the slightest interest in the common good.
