To protest against environmentalists and the Obama administration, conservative truck owners are tricking-out diesel pickups with coal stacks that belch out puffs of black smoke in a new campaign in the political culture war.”

Liberals are assholes because many of the things they stand for are wrong, and even some of the good things they stand for are pursued in a manner that is wrong.

But conservatives have achieved something more remarkable by increasingly standing for nothing, and managing to be even bigger assholes while doing it. – Joe Grabowski

Ideology is heresy. Heresy is sin. Sin is where a creature “asserts it’s nothingness”. And sin makes you stupid. And so the ideological left and right, in abandoning its connection to Christ (accept for use as a flag now and then) increasingly is about the exaltation of Nothingness, whether through abortion and euthanasia, or through mindless atavistic nihilism.

It’s the gospel–or Nothing.  Oh, and before anyone begins with the vapors about how the saints would never talk that way:

“[F]or as long as your reverend paternity will be determined to tell these shameless lies, others will be permitted, on behalf of his English majesty, to throw back into your paternity’s shitty mouth, truly the shit-pool of all shit, all the muck and shit which your damnable rottenness has vomited up, and to empty out all the sewers and privies onto your crown divested of the dignity of the priestly crown, against which no less than against the kingly crown you have determined to play the buffoon.” – St. Thomas More, Consummate Badass

Grabowski let these clowns off easy.

I think another problem is the rush to assumption that people are slaves to ideology just because they take a stance I wouldn’t, or – horrors – do or say something in a way I wouldn’t. I saw this and immediately thought of the farmers who, in the Great Depression, poured out gallons of milk in protest of the government’s policies. Wasting the milk I might add. People will do what they can with what they have. Maybe they are heretics, but we don’t know enough from the story to know their hearts and minds, other than we disagree with their tactics. The rest is assumption. If you think about it, if we follow the Gospel, it ought to stay with what we know. That’s not to say we can’t condemn the tactics (in this case, deliberately polluting the air). But our condemnation should stop there, unless we’re privy to something more about the people doing such things.

So you didn’t see them being obnoxious assholes to the people in back of them? And they do this to protest the government? To act like assholes to others? Sorry, bishop, that dog don’t hunt.

Reread my post. Then correct your response accordingly.

The video is quite clear. The are not just polluting the air, they are being assholes. Youtube is full of these videos, and they make quite clear about what is in their hearts when they use these tactics (especially towards people who choose to drive Priuses). So our condemnation need not stop at their tactics. They are little better than bigots. Though I don’t necessarily let Prius drivers off the hook either.

I’m not saying you can’t comment on what they’re doing. And all you know about their hearts is that they’re acting in a way most would say they shouldn’t. Does that make them heretics? When you act in a way you shouldn’t, are you a heretic? I know this is the Catholic blogosphere and all, but I still think that guy meant it when he warned about judging and all. Heretic, like racist, is a term that should be use seldom, and only when proven, not with ‘well duh, obviously’.

If they are Christians, they are heretics–they defy the most basic Christian teachings by being assholes to fellow motorists, basing their actions on political ideology over the Gospel. If they are not Christians, then they are heathens.

I didn’t really even read the St Thomas More quote. I just saw the s-word a bunch of times and thought to myself, “Hm, that’s kinda…cool.”

    I’m a terrible person.

His invective against Luther (Responsio ad Lutherum) is masterful in it’s use of the s-word.

ETA: I think this quote may actually be from RAL

“According to the article, for about $500 people are able to install the smoke stacks and additional equipment, which trick the diesel truck’s engine into pumping out more fuel than needed, leading to mushrooming clouds of black smoke.” Around here, it’s just another truck crossed over northbound from Tijuana.
