I’m lobbying for them to rename it “Brontosaurus”.
I’m all in favor of Pluto being a planet once more, but not for the reasons you might think.
Planets were given the name of greco-roman gods. Júpiter is the name of the most important god in that pantheon. However, Júpiter had two brothers: Neptune and Pluto.
Taken together, this triad constituted the most powerful gods of the entire mythology. They defeated the titans and divided the Universe among themselves (Júpiter took the heavens, Neptune the seas, Pluto the underworld, and the earth became neutral ground… or Jupiter’s share I don’t remember).
Have a planet named Júpiter and another Neptune and then have a celestial body named Pluto which is NOT a planet is an insult to mythology.
If Pluto is not a planet, then rename Uranus or Saturn as Pluto, since Uranus and Saturn were not gods by themselves, but rather titans.
PS: I’m all for Ceres being a planet too, Ceres being one of Jupiter’s sisters too.
This is the most atypical astronomy-nerd comment ever and it totally makes my week.
You haven’t seen nothing. Wait ’til you hear my project of planet-forming the entire greco-roman pantheon.
Their orbits could be as such as to fight the mythological monsters in the constelations.
