It exerts constant pressure on our greed to return and without firm pushback from the Christian tradition (and it took the Christian tradition a long time to get rid of it and not without multiple setbacks) it instantly returns.
One major way it is returning today is via our criminal injustice system which, in cooperation with godless capitalism, has now transformed the United States into the largest prison state on planet earth, bigger than Stalin’s Gulag Archipelago.
And the next obvious and natural step for a godless post-Christian society is to turn that population of prisoners into slaves, which we are doing with brisk efficiency here in the Land of the Free.
On a related note, a sheriff in Massachusetts is offering his pool of slaves to our incoming Pharaoh to help build his wall.
The thing is: it’s our conservative Christian population who are most in favor of supporting the “law and order policies” designed to expand our prison population and creating a bottomless pool of slaves. But we are supposed to obey the marching orders from the One who said:
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to bring good tidings to the afflicted;
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
to proclaim the year of the LORD’S favor (Is 61:1–2).
Turns out that stuff is all “liberal” and can be safely ignored and if you notice it or talk about it, you are just a Seamless Garment heretic whose *real* agenda is undermining the fight against abortion.
So how about instead of ignoring those marching orders, we try listening to the Church and not reflexively supporting right wing culture of death priorities that make war on her. How about we try bravely and creatively breaking with our political tribe and thinking with the mind of Christ and acting in obedience to him instead.
We could, in fact, try that.
