Tom Kreitzberg use to remark that any religious tradition that practices infant baptism is one without rigorous membership requirement. There’s something incredibly perverse about making Jesus into a sock puppet for turning away the desperate. I’ve even seen people trot out Jesus remark about it being easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle to justify this. But, of course, his remark was directed, not at the desperate poor, for whom he has nothing but words of blessing, but at the rich billionaire who is currently kicking them in the teeth to the applause of “prolife” conservative Christians.
