Buried amongst the headlines about the hateful Westboro Baptist Church’s antics and their day before the Supreme Court yesterday, was the story of this wonderful, magnificent young man. Thought you might want to post the first two stories and possibly the third one as well in contrast. Take note in the first story that his best friend and Naval Academy roommate’s body was disinterred so that they could be buried next to one another in Arlington. Brings to mind the friendship of King David and Jonathan.
Elegy in a Country Churchyard
The men that worked for England
They have their graves at home:
And bees and birds of England
About the cross can roam.
But they that fought for England,
Following a falling star,
Alas, alas for England
They have their graves afar.
And they that rule in England,
In stately conclave met,
Alas, alas for England,
They have no graves as yet. – G.K. Chesterton
The goons of Westboro are repellent indeed. But the goons running the State and setting national policy who sent that fine man (and so many other fine men like him) to his death are the real problem. God bless the noble men and women who have made such sacrifices for love of country. Grant them a country worthy of such sacrifices and leaders who really appreciate the human beings they shovel around like concrete in their geopolitical theorizing. Bush was at least sincere in his secular messianic delusions about salvation through democratic capitalist imperialism. Obama is a total cynic who doesn’t even believe that false gospel, yet still he continues our disastrous adventure, as Andrew Bacevich, another honorable soldier who has paid for this war with his dearest blood, points out.
