Fake Modern Druids Get Recognized as a Religion…

…in the Country that Used to Be England.

Here’s the deal: Druidry is not thousands of years old. Rather, Druids lived a long time ago and then died out, replaced by Christianity. For centuries, there were no Druids at all. And since Druids kept no sacred texts and did not pass on to us very much information about their rites or beliefs except what bits and piece that happened to survive in Christian customs, we effectively know nothing about the interior contours of Druidry.

What passes for Druidry today is basically a fake reconstruction cooked up over the past few decades and largely driven by modern neo-pagan romanticizing about nature, reaction to Christianity, and reading too much Tolkien while remaining in ignorance of his Catholic faith. It’s a kluge of junk compounded of sexual revolution BS dressed up in archaic English, Gaia worship, and twaddle about the goddess. The UK can pretend it’s a serious religion. We are, after all, talking about the land where all religions are equally superior to the Catholic faith. But you have to be daft to take this stuff seriously.

The irony is that while they are not real Druids, they are real pagans, because being a pagan is as easy as pie. All you need do is what Paul describes all pagans as doing: “Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man or birds or animals or reptiles.” (Romans 1:22-23) The goal here is to abandon the worship of the Creator for the creature. Much of the West is currently engaged in that project. Whether you do it by exactly mimicking the rites of Dionysius or just make up crap in pseudo-Olde English matters not a jot. It’s the thought that counts.

Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man or birds or animals or reptiles. Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for ever! Amen. For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. Their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural, and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in their own persons the due penalty for their error. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a base mind and to improper conduct. They were filled with all manner of wickedness, evil, covetousness, malice. Full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malignity, they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God’s decree that those who do such things deserve to die, they not only do them but approve those who practice them. (Romans 1:20-32)

The irony, of course, is that after this dire diagnosis, Paul will go on to announce the shocking fact that God has not come to earth to destroy us, but to lavish mercy on us as his strange reward to us for our species participation on the brutal murder of his only Son. The pagan to whom Paul spoke were wise enough to feel regret for their sins that had driven nails through the hands and feet of Christ and they resolved the matter by ceasing to be pagan and beginning to be Christian. Modern fake pagans have yet to show whether they retain the wisdom or merely the vices of the ancient pagans.
