Prayers might not be amiss for the parish of Our Lady of Mercy in Easton PA. The church building sustained a deal of water damage in this year’s rains and the structure is in need of $1.4 million in repairs. These include shoring up the two towers, one of which holds a three-bell peal, and repairing leaks in the north facade. There is a fund-raising effort underway, for which success is prayed, and the diocese will help as far as it can, but many of the parishioners have limited incomes. The building itself is nearly a hundred years old, but two of the root parishes that were united a few years ago were founded in the 1840s and 1850s. The cornerstone for the first church on the site was laid by St. John Nepomucene Neumann, fourth bishop of Philadelphia, canonized in 1977.
The building is a Gothic-Romanesque hybrid with a suite of German-made stained glass windows. The present arrangement of the interior, though modified after Vatican II, was laid out by the noted liturgist Fr. John P.N. Fries and has been called “a catechism in stone and glass.” Your many faithful minions might wish to pray for the success of the fund raising, or even contact the pastor:

Father, hear our prayer that this parish could repair their Church and that your people would act generously to help this need. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Mother Mary and St. Joseph the Builder, pray for them!
