Scratch an Atheist, Find a Fundamentalist

Scratch an Atheist, Find a Fundamentalist 2014-12-31T15:33:00-07:00

New graphic novel blasphemes… well, not God or his angels exactly, but the weird cartoonish vision of them offered by Left Behind Millenialist scenarios. If God was the sort of god portrayed in Left Behind books or the Rapture twaddle commonly circulated in some sectors of Protestantism, I’d probably blaspheme him too.

An awful lot of atheism is just fundamentalism that has become toxic. That doesn’t mean it is justified. It just means that the injustice atheists do God is often not culpable. An atheist is always guilty of grave matter in his sin. That’s because, say what he will, God exists and is pure good. To hate him is to hate all that is good. But many atheists, while guilty of grave matter, are not fully culpable and may not be culpable at all. That’s why we leave these matters up to God, who alone knows the heart.
