Clues to the clueless: the violence in the Old Testament does not constitute the guiding template for all of Scripture. The Old Testament has to be read in light of the New and the whole thing has to be read in light of the tradition and the Magisterium. What is missing from the discussion is the *way* in which Sacred Texts are read by the community that holds them sacred. Nowhere do outlets like NPR make clearers that America’s cultural elites are apostate Puritans than in the easy assumption that sola scriptura is the normal way to read scripture. One man and his Bible, dipping in for proof texts to back up a pre-ordained theological theory. The NPR story drips with the rancid Puritanism of New England. It’s just a few generation further along than Cotton Mather and has a new set of witches to burn in the name of the new religion of multiculturalism which view all religions as equally superior to Christianity and, most especially, the Catholic Faith.
