Looking to do a corporal and spiritual work of mercy?

A reader writes:

I wanted to ask you to pass on some information to members of your parish and your blog followers who might be interested in participating in some aspect of “visiting the prisoners”. I posted about it today. If you notice, one of the opportunities is simply donating Catholic books to a woman from California who will see that they are distributed to Catholic inmates. There are things at the other end of the spectrum as well – things that require a good deal more in terms of personal involvement. I know there are many people who are reluctant to be in direct contact with inmates, but perhaps there are folks in your parish who would be willing to clear off their bookshelves a bit.
