Eek! There are Anti-Catholics Among Hillary’s Supporters!

So about the Wikileaks thing. Turns out there are (gasp!) anti-Catholics on the left. They (you may want to sit down for this) think the Church is backwards about sex. They start organizations that try to get Catholic liberals to do things Catholic liberals want to do. Some of the things Catholic liberals want to do agree with stuff the Church wants to do: health care, living wage, reducing gun violence, etc. Some of the things Catholic liberals want to do oppose stuff the Church wants to do: gay marriage, abortion, you know the drill.

Mind-boggling. Who could have foreseen it? And when those Catholic liberals chat in private, sometimes they say Mean Things about Catholic conservatives like “They can throw around ‘Thomistic’ thought and ‘subsidiarity’ and sound sophisticated because no one knows what the hell they’re talking about.” O the huge manatee!

Pardon me while I reach for my fainting couch. Oh wait. I’ve complained about the distortion of subsidiarity myself. Turns out that’s not an attack on the Church by liberals. It’s a defense of the Church’s teaching from libertarian distortion.

Here’s the thing: yet again both political parties try to exploit Catholics where they can and both political parties have no problem spitting on the Faith when it gets in their way.

So, for instance, just this past August, Trump’s racist alt Right campaign chief Steve Bannon was busy saying:

“I understand why Catholics want as many Hispanics in this country as possible, because the church is dying in this country, right? If it was not for the Hispanics.”

And this: “(Paul Ryan) is rubbing his social justice Catholicism in my nose every second.”

And Ann Coulter was busy declaring “This is why our founders distrusted Catholics” when the Holy Father was here last year, speaking on behalf of the brown-skinned people Coulter hates so much she wrote this:

And that’s the thing: as I have never tired of pointing out, Trump shares all the evils Hillary promotes and then some. Worried about threats to religious liberty and hostility to the Church? Trump’s got ’em both covered way better than Hillary. Because only one candidate wants to ban immigration solely on the basis of religion. Only one candidate has suggested that all the adherents of a religion need to be registered on a state database. Only one candidate has mused wistfully about Japanese internment camps as a way of dealing with people of one particular religion. And it’s not Hillary.

More than that, only one candidate has managed to inspire Catholics who regularly denounce the Holy Father as a Marxist false prophet, a homosexual conspirator and enemy of the family, a heretic, a Stalinist, and “Che Guevara’s pope“. Only one candidate is defended as “Constantine” by people who declare Catholic social teaching to be a “myth“, who urge us to ignore the Church’s teaching on economics, and who declare that if you think spending national resources trying to deport 12-20 million hard working people with families who are vital to our economy, you are the moral equivalent of an abortionist.

Nor is it the case that Hillary has ever called the pope “disgraceful”. Only Donald Trump has done that, to the thunderous cheers of “faithful conservative” Catholics–the ones to whom it never occurs that Trump’s plans for Muslims would, if Hillary advocated them for Catholics, generate shrieks of hysteria about religious persecution that would shatter glass.

In short, while there are certainly anti-Catholics on the Left, and Kaine is doing yeoman work with the normal rhetoric of bastardizing Catholic faith to allow abortion and gay marriage, there is also no shortage or perfectly good critiques of that, including one from Yr Obdt. Svt. Indeed, I’ve seen beaucoup calls for his excommunication etc. But there is a famine in the land for conservative Catholic criticism of Trump. Instead we have a host of prolife Catholic and Protestant Prolife establishment types degrading themselves to defend Trump’s every word and deed and fight the Church, the bishops, and the pope for their idol, a draft-dodging, adulterous sex predator who calls the Holy Father “disgraceful”.

So who’s the subversive anti-Catholic fifth columnist again?
