…used as the preface to a motivational speech. But this guy seems to pull it off. Certainly better advice than, “Give up. We’re all doomed!” Read more
I’m a youth minister as a small town parish in Wisconsin. Next week (Sunday through Wednesday the 14-17th) I’m bringing eight students on a Catholic Youth Expeditions camping trip, where they will camp, pray, hike, and experience Our Lord in many different, beautiful ways throughout the week with about 30 other teens and a dedicated staff. I’m so excited to see the ways God will touch their hearts! My policy is that friends are always welcome to parish events, no... Read more

For newbies to the blog, Manalive is a fun little novella by G.K. Chesterton which you can read here, if you like. Dale Ahlquist (Executive Producer) and Joey Odendahl (Screenwriter and Director) completely lost their senses and decided to cast me as Innocent Smith, the wonderfully eccentric character at the heart of the action in this zany story. This past March, the funding finally having come together, cast and crew converged on Savannah and we shot the principal photography. Then... Read more
Hear me, my sniveling lackeys! We are experiencing a Dark Tower glut! This shall not stand! I need you to get out there and finish off the destruction of the American economy so that this tedious distraction can be swept from public consciousness and people can return their focus to what is right and proper: ME! Go forth, my beloved flying monkeys, spending more than you have, buying Chinese dreck, taking out loans you can’t possibly pay back, and watching... Read more

My profound gratitude to all of you who pitched into the Tin Cup Rattle. In particular, I want to thank reader Susan, not only for her generosity, but for her service to our country in the Marines. She’s recently been promoted to Major and asked for our prayers. You’ve got ’em! I’m also pleased to announce that the winner of yesterday’s “Have Victor Lams Write a Song About Whatever Subject in the World Strikes Your Fancy” contest was reader Kenneth... Read more
Our child’s mental/psychological condition has continued to deteriorate over the past two months, so much so that we are about to leave for a hospital far from home to check him in for an extended stay. They tell us that the average stay is 7-10 days, but I suspect that we’re looking at 2-3 weeks. And since the hospital is 97 miles each way from our house (and only the last 20 miles are on Interstate highways), we’re facing either... Read more
C.S. Lewis remarks somewhere that “God is love” sounds beautiful in an April wood, but like vicious mockery when you are sitting at the bed of a dying child. I have a good solid Irish sense of gloom and doom, and a deeply pagan emotional makeup whenever tragedy strikes. I will sometimes run across atheists who will jabber about how people of faith are sheltered and blinkered from “facing reality” and, by that, they always mean the reality of pain,... Read more
