More Nast(iness)

No artist could do political cartoons like Thomas Nast, and few disliked the Catholic Church more. Here in this 1870’s piece for Harper’s, Lady Liberty, described here as “the Tigress protecting her cubs,” keeps the Church (in the person of two cassocked priests) from taking over America’s public educational system. The decree the priest is holding reads”Surrender your American GODLESS INFIDEL EDUCATION to the Infallible Roman Church by Order of the Pope.” Lady Liberty stands on a platform titled “Liberty: The Foundation of Free Popular Government.”
