New York Archdiocese Celebrates 201st Birthday

On this day in 1808, Pope Pius VII named Bishop John Carroll of Baltimore an Archbishop, the first in the United States. Until then the Diocese of Baltimore covered the United States. New dioces were erected in New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Bardstown (now Louisville). The Diocese of New York covered the state of New York and northern New Jersey until the 1840’s.
