Ave Maria Magazine (1865-1970)

Today in 1865 marks the beginning of Ave Maria, one of the most successful Catholic journals of its time. Started as a religious magazine for Catholic families, it was published by the Holy Cross Fathers out of Notre Dame. Its goal was to foster devotion to the Blessed Mother. It soon attracted the leading Catholic writers throughout the English-speaking world, and by 1930 it had a circulation of 35,000. It ceased publication in 1970.
