On this day in 1822, the Feast of St. James the Greater, Bishop John Connolly of New York laid the cornerstone for St. James Church. St. James was the first Catholic church in Brooklyn, as well as the first on Long Island. When Brooklyn became a separate diocese in 1853, St. James was named the cathedral. In 1982, it was accorded the status of a basilica.
