The Synod of Thurles, 1850

The Synod of Thurles, 1850

Today marks the beginning of the Synod of Thurles in 1850, the first formal meeting of the Irish episcopacy since 1642. Called by Archbishop Paul Cullen it dealt with the question of Catholics in college and the standardization of pastoral practices. The issue of individual bishops speaking on government matters later arose. The bishops adopted the papal condemnation of the ‘godless colleges’ but were divided over priests accepting college positions and lay involvement. Cullen’s hardline positions narrowly carried the day. The synod demonstrated the church’s growing confidence.
