First Trappists Come to America, 1803

On this day in 1803, the first Trappists came to the United States. They settled in Kentucky, but none of their foundations there proved to be successful. By 1805, they returned to France, but they returned in 1848 to establish the Our Lady of Gethsemani Monastery in Kentucky, where Thomas Merton would spend his monastic life.
