Born in Virginia, he was orphaned at an early age and went to work at age fourteen. At age 22 he joined the New York Stock Exchange. He was involved in consolidating several utility companies and in 1892 he formed the Metropolitan Street Railway Company, the nation’s first holding company. In 1905 it merged with the Interborough Rapid Transit Company to finance a subway system for New York City. He owned one of the world’s finest art collections, and is belived to have given $20 million to Catholic causes. He died in New York City on this day in 1928.
