By the 1920’s, the Ku Klux Klan had become the leading exponent of anti-Catholicism in the United States. With an estimated five million members nationwide, this was nothing to scoff at. In cities and in the countryside, Klansmen burned crosses in front of Catholic churches and schools, organized rallies against Catholics, and organized politically to defeat Catholics at the polls. This 1920’s cartoon gives some sense of the intensity of their hatred for Catholics.
