First Redemptorists Arrive in US

Today in 1832 marks the arrival of the first Redemptorists in the United States. Their website has this to say:
In 1832, 100 years after their Congregation was founded, six members sailed from Europe to the United States at the request of the American bishops. They initially worked with American Indians. Establishing parishes and living in community posed extraordinary difficulties due to the migratory life-style of the people they began serving. The Redemptorists soon expanded their ministry to include other marginalized people, namely, Irish, German, and Slavik immigrants. They ministered to the needs of these people and opened parishes and schools for them frequently emphasizing the teaching of English which was often completely or only poorly known by these immigrant populations. Today, Redemptorists minister to immigrant communities from numerous Spanish-speaking countries, African-Americans and Asian peoples. They work to adapt their ministry to the changing needs of these new “abandoned” and marginalized groups.
