Last Friday afternoon, I donned my running clothes and wheezed the mile and a half to August’s school, pushing Brooksie in the double stroller. After I picked him up and we all played awhile in the nearby park, the boys climbed in, I set out the snack of goldfish and made promises of hot cocoa at home, just as the sun began to set and the wind picked up its chill. It was a fifty-something degree day in the sunshine.... Read more

Meister Eckhart (1260-1328) was a German mystic. This is from his poem “Jerusalem” in Love Poems from God: Twelve Sacred Voices from the East and West. I’m loving this collection. (It’d make a wonderful Valentine’s gift if you ask me…) Read more

Friends, I’ve been doing a lot of reading about our favorite, St. Benedict, this week for my side project. I’ve been thinking a lot about what made his Rule radical, how choosing to value moderation over zealousness and compassion over the enforcement of harsh commitments within the monastery, allowed (and continues to allow) countless people to experience the kindness of Christ. I’m still learning what it means to value moderation and compassion as a follower of Jesus, but I feel... Read more

Ed Cyzewski takes his role as peace-maker, encourager, and writer-friend seriously. When you get to know the guy, you realize that of course he would be the man to host a year’s worth of guest posts from women sharing their experiences in ministry. He cares deeply about the Church. Also, he’s a stay-at-home-dad trying to juggle fatherhood and writing. I so appreciate having him here and learning from him. I was deep in the middle of moving when his most... Read more

“I find here a mysterious sense of time. I am told about patience and perseverance, about waiting quietly, about living totally in the moment. Yet I am also told about the need to run. Sometimes I feel as though I am being asked to be one of the disciples, leaving everything and rushing forward to follow Christ. Sometimes I feel as though I am being asked to be Mary at the foot of Cross, standing and waiting. But again I... Read more

Well, I don’t think I should start this post as a resident of San Francisco without acknowledging the heartbreak of last night. *Moment of silence.* (Yes, I’m an Eagles fan but all this living in SF stuff has made me a bit sensitive to the 49er’s and our city’s sorrow.) My four-year-old actually came home from the Super Bowl party he and his dad attended (without his sick brother and me) and said, “Mom, I almost cried when they didn’t... Read more

Last week I sat in the small room with twelve or so women. One of the very best of the bakers among us had brought scones and a hand-made cream cheese spread with craisons and probably crack mixed in. She was, of course, serving that cream cheese in squatty etched glass mason jars. I love women who can even make their snacks beautiful, even if a secret part of me is contemplating grabbing one of those mason jars and sticking... Read more

I’ve recently gotten to know Joy Bennett in these internet parts and I’m constantly moved by her encouragement, honesty and vulnerability. It’s a gift to have her here today.  I have four children, three living. My oldest fought for her life for eight years through hospital stays, surgeries, therapies, special education, medications, feeding tubes, wheelchairs, emergency rooms, breathing treatments, seizures, and sleepless nights (both hers and ours). She lost her fight in October of 2008. It has been over four... Read more

Happy Thankful Tuesday, people! Today I have a post over at A Deeper Church. It’s one of those really-hard-to-write posts because I care about what I’m saying so passionately. It’s one of those it-took-three-weeks-to-write-this posts. One of those, I-trashed-3,000-words in-the-process-of-writing-this posts. Here’s a smidgen of it: I was sincere as a college student, completely earnest in my love for Jesus, in my plans to graduate and jet off to a life in Africa. I was going to give up everything: the idea... Read more
