I had a breakdown freak-out sobfest last week. I feel like if you’re gonna cry, go hard or go home. So the sobfest included my slamming my fists into the couch, standing up, screaming, “Don’t laugh at me!” at my husband and then stomping to my office with the intent of slamming the door until I realized my kids were sleeping so I just flipped  off the light switch with as much fierce fervor as I could muster. (I... Read more

Megan Tietz owns such command of language and knows just how to use gentleness to guide her readers to the good truth. This woman has a lot going on right now. (For details check out her blog.) And I’m honored she has taken the time to be with us here today. After you read this post, you’ll probably want to click on her previous guest post from the {This Sacred Everyday} series. I’m so glad to welcome her.   Last week,... Read more

I’m grateful that August learned about skin in science last Friday which led to a sweet family conversation  about how wonderful it is that everyone’s skin is unique. I’m also thankful that my son still doesn’t know about “white” skin and “black” skin. (Aren’t those the craziest, least descriptive words to use for our skin tones???) I agree much more with August’s assessment that his skin is blonde and some kids have light brown skin and some have dark brown... Read more

I was strangely moved by that almost final scene in the movie Lincoln, when the president walks away, his back to the camera, down the long White House hallway and into the shadows. Of course we,  the audience, know Lincoln is walking down that hall for the final time. We know he is on his way to Ford’s Theater and we know what waits for him there. But that’s not what moved me as I watched that scene. What moved... Read more

I’m excited to welcome Seth Haines as our first guest writer in the “One Good Phrase” series. I discovered Seth’s writing via his wife, Amber Haines (who has some of the sharpest, most lovely words around). When he co-curated Mother Letters with Amber, I was happy to find out he blogs as well. And the man appreciates a good poem! You should follow him on Twitter at @sethhaines. Thanks for being here, Seth. —— The son of a Catholic father and... Read more

Coffee in the middle of a tired day Brooksie’s current obsession with the sky One of our new family resolutions: Sharing our “highs and lows” during every dinner. (And laughing at Brooks’ responses: “What was the best part of your day, Brooksie? Sky! What was the hardest part of your day? Sky!) Finishing Kristin Lavransdatter last week. Don’t you love the achy feeling of ending a good book and knowing those characters are going to live with you for the... Read more

“Home is the center of my being where I can hear the voice that says, ‘you are my beloved in whom I am well pleased.’ Jesus made it clear that the same voice that he heard in the Jordan River and on Mount Tabor can be heard by me. He makes it clear that there is a home with the Father. But if I decide to keep control, if I go out into the world, I will keep running around... Read more

I’m trying something new for the next couple of months. Every Friday I’ll keep it simple around here. I’ll show you what’s written on my chalkboard. (In my sixteen-year-old-boy handwriting. So sorry.) It might be a poem or a quote, just something I’m reading and thinking about. And I’m hoping, something you may be interested in thinking about too. Welcome to my chalkboard…       Read more
