FYI: Cyber Sex/Pornography

FYI: Cyber Sex/Pornography March 13, 2009

I just recently attended a conference in regards to sex addiction and its impact on both individuals and families. I will be sharing some of the information and statistics I learned about in upcoming posts. I am a big believer of arming ourselves with the proper information so that we are better equipped to educate our children, speak openly with our spouses, and be more honest with ourselves. My experience with statistics is that the LDS population is not immune to these numbers.

Porn revenue far exceeds combined revenues of all professional football, baseball and basketball and larger than combined revenues of ABC, CBS and NBC (12 billion in US alone, 57 billion worldwide in 2005). (Adult Video News & Top Ten Reviews, Inc. 2005)

More than 32 million unique individuals visited a porn site in September of 2003. Nearly 22.8 million of them were male (71%), while 9.4 million adult site visitors were female (29%). In 2008 it was approximately 73 million unique visitors on average per month. (Stephanie Carnes, PhD)

72 million people worldwide will visit internet porn sites this year. (Top Ten Reviews 2005)

Adults admitting to internet sex addiction is 10% in 2005 – 28% of those are women. (internet filter review.com)

More than 70% of men ages 18-34 visit a pornographic site in a typical month. (comscore media matrix)

20% of men admitted to accessing porn at work. (Top Ten Reviews.com)

There has been an almost 20-fold increase of identified pages of internet pornography in just five years. (Top Ten Reviews, Inc.)

There are 4.2 million pornography websites – 12% of the total web pages. (2008 – top ten reviews)

American consumers spent $220 million at fee-based sites in 2001; $148 million in 1999.

1000 new internet porn sites are created each day.

35% of all downloads are pornography (2008).

These are serious statistics with serious implications and consequences. We cannot be in denial that our youth, our men and even our women are affected by internet use of pornography.
