Comment on “FYI: What to Look For: Signs of Youth and Pornography” April 30, 2009

I wonder if you have ever been a teenager yourself? Do you really think that the only possible reason that a teen might not want a parent to communicate via a “hidden language” is to hide Porn use? I have nothing to say that wouldn’t be insulting. You’re a real therapist? Really?

I’m not sure what the anger or frustration behind this comment is about. You are referring to the post regarding POSSIBLE signs that a teenager is looking at pornography. This was information that I came across at a recent sexual addictions conference I attended regarding the latest and most current information regarding the topic. I thought it might be of value to my readers. However, it was not meant to be “all inclusive” meaning that these behaviors are ONLY indicative of pornography use. Of course there are other reasons why teens choose to communicate in a “hidden language.” In general, the adolescent developmental cycle includes in its normal progression a certain distancing from parents.

Instead of resorting to insults, I would hope that you could voice your concerns in a more productive and clear manner and I would be happy to address them.

Comment I received on post:
Nice response. Granted, I’m a therapist myself so I’m biased, 🙂 but this commenter seems to be feeling a little reactive. It makes sense though, many people (myself included at times) just experience and react without much of a filter.

Keep it up.

Thank you! I agree that working on our reactivity is a challenge for most (myself definitely included).

Comment I received from original poster:
Way to walk it back, to speak in the demotic. This is a much more reasonable post than the previous one which told whoever reads this blog that normal adolescent behavior to make some room between themselves and their parents equals some sort of horrible sin. Thank you for the clarification.

I’m glad I was able to clarify.
