I think this is interesting information in light of my poll results where more women than men reported having premarital sex. This study is also interesting in that it shows that teens have delayed their first sexual encounters within the last 10 years: correlated to more sexual education.
Some of the theories out there as to why girls may not be more aggressive about their sexual safety is that they see it more as the boy’s responsibility (i.e. condom use) and it is not “proper” or “feminine” for them to take matters into their own hands. Another issue, especially in a religious or conservative culture, is that many girls plan on abstinence as their primary form of protection. When they find themselves in a situation where they become sexual, they are not prepared.
