How do we choose a sex therapist?
My wife and I would like to see a sex therapist to address issues we have in our sexual relationship. How does one go about selecting a therapist? I’ve found a few listings for the Salt Lake area in the yellowpages, but I don’t know how to choose between them. Are there professional listings which describe the specialties and professional perspectives of therapists in a given area?
As an active but somewhat heterodox Mormon, I’m particularly concerned with finding a therapist who will understand and respect my religious beliefs, but will not be too dogmatic about traditional cultural conventions, as far as they might relate to our issues (things like gender roles, particularly conservative ideas about sexuality in marriage, things of that nature).

I would recommend finding a therapist off of the AASECT  (American Association of Sexuality Edcuators, Counselors and Therapists) list serve or AAMFT (American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy).  I would also recommend being very upfront with the therapist as to the qualities and resources you are looking for from the get go – including concerns you have regarding your faith.  The more honest, frank and open you are with your therapist, the greater success you will have in getting your needs met and making sure he/she is a good fit for you and your wife.  Good luck!
