FYI: Specific Phobias
Phobias affect approximately 10% of the population.  Many do not result in severe impairment.  Many are fears that developed in early childhood.  As parents we can help our children by helping them face their fears.  Repeated observation of a parent with a phobia can lead to children developing them as well.  Phobias are very treatable.

Current Treatments:

  • Relaxation Training
  • Cognitive Therapy
  • Incremental Exposure

 Ways to Overcome:

  • Be willing to take a risk.
  • Be willing to tolerate discomfort.
  • Be willing to retreat when overwhelmed.
  • Plan for contingencies – what happens if….
  • Plan for exposures in advance – what are you going to do?
  • Trust your own pace.
  • Let go of the need for complete control.
  • Reward yourself for small successes. 
  • Learn to cope with the early stages of panic.
  • Repeat positive statements to yourself.  
  • Practice.
  • Expect setbacks.
  • Be prepared to experience strong emotions.
  • Follow through.
  • Gradually put aside props and crutches such as a support person, tranquilizers or security devices.
