Salah is the one thing that can calm me down, without fail, when I’m angry, sad, or have just overreacted about something. It’s a reminder that I will go back to Allah, and my troubles suddenly don’t seem so bad anymore. And if I was upset with someone, offering salah reminds me of Allah’s supreme forgiveness and the fact that He loves those who forgive others. It’s also a reminder to me that I should try to forgive others, just as I would like Allah to forgive me for my mistakes.

I hate the feeling that comes after I’ve sinned or disappointed Allah in some other way. It’s a feeling of shame, regret, and disappointment. Sometimes I even start to feel hopeless about myself. These are the moments when shaytan whispers to me that Allah will never forgive me, or that there’s no point in trying to be a good Muslim. But then salah time comes, and I stand before my Creator no matter how I’m feeling about myself. I’m reminded that even if I’ve messed up, and no matter how many times I have made that mistake, I can always turn to God.
