Many years ago before my Sister-In-Law first came for a visit, when we were still in the preparation stages, I started really paying attention to the visibility of hijabis in our city.  At that time, my overseas family had this preconceived notion that hijabis were very rare in the United States and she would stick out like a celebrity.  (Much like I do when we visit the small town outside of Cairo where Khaled’s family lives.)  So, in the days... Read more

So, last night when I was feeling particularly crappy about some choices I made, and things I said…and the tone of my voice, I read this on Facebook: When they slept, He was awake. When they broke, He held you up. When every means failed, He saved you. When all the creation left you, He remained. He always remains. Never forget when the storms pushed you to your knees and there was no one else who could help you, He carried... Read more

First Step in selling beyond Etsy.   I created a web site to tell more people about The Wudu Cling.  You can find it at www.TheWuduCling.Com.  Share the website.  Tell your friends.  Tell people who are converting.  Buy one for someone who has recently made Shahada.  Then Let Me Know.  If you already own a Wudu Cling. Take a photo of it, send me a picture…I’ll post it to the site. Read more

A few weeks back there was another Egyptian Family Luncheon. It just so happened that it was also on the same day as my hair appointment and a slew of other things we had going on. By the time we got dressed to go and Khaled picked up our food contribution, we were an hour late. Is that odd? Not really, but we are usually on time, or within 20 minutes. This time most of the food was gone by... Read more

Little boxes on the hillside Little boxes made of ticky tacky Little boxes on the hillside Little boxes all the same There’s a pink one and a green one And a blue one and a yellow one And they’re all made out of ticky tacky And they all look just the same And the people in the houses All went to the university Where they were put in boxes And they came out all the same And there’s doctors and... Read more

There are 365 Days in a year. No matter how nice you are to your mother, you’ll never repay her for giving you life. Everyone in America gathered together to help the people who died during the hurricanes and when the little kids got shot two weeks ago…even the President was crying.  But kids get killed like that every day in Syria and no one pays attention. Guns aren’t stupid, people are stupid. Smart Phones and iPods and iPads and... Read more

So, the new school I am working at is a secular, private institution.  I’m all kinds of happy there.  I look forward to my days, and if there was a way for me to be a permanent fixture there, I would give it some very serious thought.  If I could bring Kate and Pea along it would be even better…it would be perfection. The school is built on the model that they celebrate each and every walk of life.  There... Read more

Yes, we absolutely celebrate Christmas. Khaled and I had our first official date on Christmas Cookie Weekend.  Normally, you wouldn’t think much about that fact, but the truth is that I told him we needed a Christmas tree in his apartment not more than two weeks afterwards, and we went out and bought one.  The next weekend we were up at Bronners’ Christmas Wonderland buying our name ornaments. You can read the rest of my post from last year over... Read more

O Allah, protect him from the torment of the grave. O Allah, make him a precursor, a forerunner and a treasure for his parents and an answered intercessor. O Allah, make him weigh heavily in their scales (of good) and magnify their reward. Make him join the righteous of the believers. Place him in the care of Ibrahim. Save him by Your mercy from the torment of Hell. Give him a home better than his home and a family better than... Read more
