THE VIRGIN MARY AT MEDJUGORJE – THE GREATEST MYSTERY OF MODERN TIMES?

THE VIRGIN MARY AT MEDJUGORJE – THE GREATEST MYSTERY OF MODERN TIMES? December 21, 2015

It is Christmas time and as the nativity scenes are pulled out of closets and brought down from attics  it is common for almost all Christians to  turn their attention to Mary, the Mother God. On Christmas day we celebrate the birth of Christ from a virgin mother who was born without sin. These are infallible tenets of the Catholic faith. Throughout the holidays we meditate on these great mysteries and the Virgin Mary’s miraculous past. However, these days, for many Catholics this miraculous past has almost transformed into a joyful, happy myth. – Her history has turned into pretty Christmas cards. But an historical reality?  Polite Catholics tend to not go there. “Here, have a Christmas cookie – How about some egg nog?”

But the miracles of the Blessed Mother did not end with the birth of Christ and with Her assumption into heaven. Our Lady has miraculously returned to Her “Children” throughout the ages. She revealed herself to the world  in Mexico as Our Lady of Guadalupe, at Lourdes, at Fatima, and at Rwanda.

These apparitions of the Blessed Mother have been recognized as supernatural events by the Catholic Church and as “worthy of belief”.  Supernatural events  differentiate the Catholic Church from all other faiths on earth. The Catholic Church really believes – actually researches supernatural events with the best medical and scientific professionals in the world. Without miracles there would not be Saints.

Miracles have existed in the past, but as we look around the world searching for religious mysteries in a world that is increasingly reluctant to accept its reality, is it possible to find unexplained events that reveal the reality of God?  Do these types of religious phenomena, even exist anymore?

Where are today’s great mysteries that may indeed be of a supernatural nature?

Turns out the Vatican hints that a great miracle of unprecedented stature may be occurring in a place called Medjugorje. The mystery of Medjugorje is so grand and enduring that the Vatican has very publicly pursued an investigation into  ongoing apparitions of the Virgin Mary.  The Church will soon reveal the results of their five year investigation.

What makes Medjugorje so astonishing is  the scale and ambition of the phenomena. The Blessed Mother came to Medjugorje thirty five years ago with  simple but shockingly audacious words. She said in Medjugorje on the first day:  “I have come to tell the world that God exists.”  And over those thirty five years, millions and millions of people have accepted her words as worthy of belief. To many, the Queen of Peace at Medjugorje makes God profoundly real.  And through special messages, the Queen of Peace has built a beautiful mosaic that reveals a path to an eternity in  heaven. She promises that life exists after death and that eternal life will be in the presence of her Son Jesus.

Skeptics, of course abound, but some influential voices are  bravely coming forward asking penetrating questions about the truth of Medjugorje.

National Geographic award winning author Maureen Orth recently came back from Medjugorje and wrote a lengthy  cover story about the Virgin Mary.   Ms. Orth admits she was personally moved upon discovering how the Virgin Mary  was so important to so many people around the world.  Ms. Orth learned that the Virgin Mary was important not just to Catholics, but to other faiths including Muslims as well.

Ms Orth wrote extensively about Medjugorje and without words to contradict the unique narrative of the Blessed Mother, not only did Ms Orth not find fault with Medjugorje,  she concluded that the Virgin Mary is the “Most powerful woman in the world”.
