a poem: “Last Breath”

a poem: “Last Breath”

230grave.jpgI buried my friend,

though ceremoniously.
The music, words and prayers
perfumed the grave event.
I shall not see him again here,
nor he me, I don’t believe.
Still, I hold out for something.
But at this time
nothing reaches back.
It’s a dim road with a dark end.
Forgive me for saying…
the higher my hope
the deeper my sorrow.
And I can’t seem to climb
out of my own dank tomb.
Where he was laid
and where I live
are far too familiar.
On the earth or in it
is just one vowel
and one last breath.
