I want to thank Rachel Held Evans for being a part of the inspiration behind this cartoon. In a recent post of hers, The Absurd Legalism of Gender Roles: Exhibit C–“As Long As I Can’t See Her…”, she said, Piper is essentially arguing that so long as he does not have to acknowledge my humanity, so long as I keep a safe distance so he is unaware of the pitch of my voice and the presence of my breasts, he... Read more

Here are ten questions starting with the most benign and ending with the most dangerous. Ask at your own peril. How can I help? May I be excused to go to the bathroom? What books am I allowed to read? If the bible says Jonah was swallowed by a fish, why do we say whale? Why is the bible so full of contradictions? Why can’t you prove to me that there is a god? Why does me being a woman... Read more

Again, I’m a fan of Gordan Ramsay. I like his shows and I like his website! I saw this picture and I was immediately struck by the irony of it. We all know what Ramsay’s planning on doing to this little lamb. I love lamb. Ramsay loves lamb. But he’s a chef. Chef’s cook lambs. Soon enough this little lamb is going to be converted… into meat. There are vegetarian chefs and vegan chefs. The lamb would be safer with... Read more

I’m a fan of Gordon Ramsay. His shows are fascinating. We served premium coffee at the last church I pastored. It didn’t help. But I liked it. Read more

Last night I posted an update on my Facebook page expressing my condolences to Rick Warren because his youngest son committed suicide Friday night. Tragic and sad. It surprised me how quickly some people rushed in to blame Rick Warren or provide some theological explanation as to why this happened. There are no shortages of Job’s comforters. Only some of them aren’t even attempting to comfort anymore. I also posted another update on Facebook last night: It’s crucial to critique... Read more

Please take 3 minutes to watch this video of an interview with John Piper: There are a few concerns I have concerning this concerning video. First, an observation: acknowledging this is all in the context of male bantering, still… does John Piper seem to think guys only think or talk about sex? When the interviewer asked him, “I’m a guy…” Piper admits, “I thought is was going to be about sex!” It then takes Piper some time to “retrain” his... Read more

I’m not sure this letter is real but I’ve seen it before and It gets me riled up every time. Even if it’s not real I still know it happens. This is completely believable. I know first hand! This is exactly the attitude I constantly encountered in the many schools I’ve attended, churches I’ve served and ministries I’ve worked for. I also get this kind of sass from some people whose theology I question. I believe it is important to... Read more

This is one of my personal favorites. Sarah. Park and drive. I posted it a year ago and it received many comments. I think it stirred up a lot of stuff for many people. This is how most of my friends, including members of The Lasting Supper, experienced their departure from church. Mine included. I mean, my departure was precipitated by some events, but it was the culmination of many years of not being able to call it home anymore. Some... Read more

Sometimes a little frivolity is in order. I get nasty emails every day from people who lack a sense of humor. Or, they don’t have the same sense of humor as I do. Which is the same thing. Isn’t it? I’m still getting hate mail over my cartoon “Rob Bell Marries David Hayward”. Anyway, this idea popped into my head and fell out of my hands. You’re the victims of this terrible assault on your theology. Read more

Women, the abused, people of the LGBTQ community, questioners and doubters… these marginalized people are my people. This is who I draw and write about and for. I’ve been doing it for years. However, I’m still amazed at how quickly some people will rush in to try to provide balance to what I say but actually expose themselves as defenders of the perpetrators and perhaps even as perpetrators themselves. You speak up for women and someone will quickly add, “There... Read more
