What do you boast in? Now we all know the proper Christian response, but be honest with yourself: what do you boast in?
23 This is what the Lord says:
“Let not the wise boast of their wisdom
or the strong boast of their strength
or the rich boast of their riches,
24 but let the one who boasts boast about this:
that they have the understanding to know me,
that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness,
justice and righteousness on earth,
for in these I delight,”
declares the Lord. Jeremiah 9:23-24
Do you boast in your wisdom? Do you think your position in life is due primarily to your educational degrees? Do you look down on others who are less educated than you? Do you feel like your opinion must always be right because of the degrees that come after your name?
Do you boast in your strength? Does might make right to you? Do you inflict your physical strength on those around you (perhaps your family) as a show of might? Do you intentionally intimidate people physically to get your way? Ladies, do you use your physical appearance to get the attention that you crave? Do you think that somehow because you’re pretty that God loves you more or that you deserve a better deal out of life?
Do you boast in your riches? Do you take comfort and solace because the amount of money in your bank account? Do you think that the financial cushion you’ve created protects you from all the evil forces out there? Do you think you’re successful in life simply because you have more money than other people?
What do you boast in? What do you take pride in? What do you take comfort in? As believers, it should be nothing more than the fact that we “have the understanding to know God.” He is our ultimate prize. He should be the only object of our boasting?
