Why We Do What We Do

Why We Do What We Do June 21, 2013

As a follower of Jesus, we’re called to love loudly, serve others, and boldly share our hope in Christ. Sometimes we see the harvest, sometimes we don’t. But we love anyways, trusting that God is using our actions to spread the gospel and bring Himself glory.

Now, every once in awhile, it’s great to get an ‘attaboy.’ Here’s an email our church received from a very grateful parent:

My daughter is currently a patient at [the local drug/alcohol recovery center] in Columbus. She is in her fifth week of treatment.

I wanted to send a short note of thanks for the thoughtful, caring and loving acts of kindness that have been extended to her by Mt. Vernon Church. Whether a Sunday morning worship service or visits to the center by members of the congregation or pastor, she has benefitted greatly from those encounters. As I visit with her each Sunday afternoon, I can personally see a renewed strength in her spirit. Her faith has increased and reliance on God is growing. I’m confident that these things are essential in her recovery.

I’m so thankful that she has such a wonderful body of believers to care for her and pray for her as she continues on her recovery journey. As a Christian, it ministers to me as well and for that I am also grateful.
I’ve had the privilege of getting to know this sweet young lady, along with a number of our other church members who minister there at a regular basis. We do it because God calls us to, but it’s sure nice to know that we’re making a difference.
If you’re out there serving anonymously, take heart. Even though you may never hear ‘thanks,’ your Heavenly Father sees your good deeds and will reward you in heaven.
