Who’s Afraid of the Truth?

Who’s Afraid of the Truth? October 11, 2007

While there are naturally a lot of different ideas out there, Catholics often seem to be almost afraid of standing up for what we believe. Not Bishop McManus.

The College of the Holy Cross has rented space to the Massachusetts Alliance on Teen Pregnancy, which includes workshops by Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice. There’s no secret that these two organizations view human life differently than the Church. As such, not allowing them to speak on a Catholic campus has nothing to do with so-called academic freedom. It’s about maintaining the Catholic identity of the College and trying to ensure that students receive an education that is consistent with Catholic values.

Planned Parenthood and NARAL are free to espouse their positions. They do not lack venues. However, a private institution, such as a Catholic college, has no obligation to provide a forum for them. In fact, it has an obligation to create an environment that is consistent with its Catholic identity. Otherwise, forget calling it a Catholic school.

Bishop McManus has written a statement urging the Administration of the College to “unequivocally disassociate itself” from the conference. In other words, cancel the rental agreement. You can read his excellent statement by click here.
