As I’ve said before, movements like Hillsong are sapping the life out of congregational singing. Even worse, the influence they’re allowed in both evangelical and now mainline congregations is a sign that we’ve all forgotten the true function and spirit of corporate worship in the life of the church.
But what’s happening at the London Hillsong Carols event is completely beyond the pale.
I’d like to think that this isn’t considered a worship event, but some kind of theatrical production. Unfortunately, from the event’s description on the church’s website, I’m afraid this isn’t so.
“Carols at The SSE Arena is a night that is focused on celebrating what Christmas is really about – JESUS!”
I want to, at the very least, assume there were good intentions behind this. But I don’t get it.
I see plenty of lights and effects.
I see a well-choreographed production.
I see entertainment. In a sense, some of it is pretty good entertainment.
I see costumes.
I see capable and rehearsed musicians.
But I don’t really see Jesus.
I don’t see the holy Child of Bethlehem in this at all, even if a few of the words pay him lip service.
I just don’t get it.
Is this what Christmas is really about?
Or are we seeing a magnified example of what this sort of worship is really about?
