7. Have Faith In God (MUSKOGEE)
B.B. McKinney, 1934
Here’s one for the Baptists. On Sunday, September 16, 2001, we were all still trying to make some sense out of the events of the week before. I was a freshman at Baylor University, and I could tell that my very, very small world was never going to be the same. I showed up to Columbus Avenue Baptist Church that morning, half expecting to hear some patriotic anthems. I’m so glad they went another direction. This gospel song, borne out of depression-era hardship, was the declaration of faith and hope that my heart needed.
Have faith in God in your pain and your sorrow,
His heart is touched with your grief and despair;
Cast all your cares and your burdens upon him,
And leave them there, oh, leave them there.
