Once again, Richard Lindsay and I have compiled our list of ten spiritually or theologically significant films from 2010. Of course we have not seen every film released this year (from what I’ve read about it, Blue Valentine might well have made the list). In fact, we don’t necessarily agree on every one on the list; however, of the films we have seen, these are the ones that have stuck with us. We’re not listing these in any particular order... Read more

One of the reasons that this is the most wonderful time of the year is that studios are finally releasing some of their finest films for Oscar consideration. It’s not that great films haven’t already released earlier this year (think Social Network or Winter’s Bone, for example), it’s just that a rush of them tend to emerge around this time of year. Combined with the not-so-Oscar-worthy Holiday blockbusters, they make this time a rich movie-going experience. The highlight of the... Read more

Kino Video has just released The Complete Metropolis, what will likely be the most complete edition of one of the greatest films ever made that suffered some of the worst editorial treatment in film history. The Fritz Lang silent sci-fi masterpiece has gone through a remarkable history of reincarnations after its initial release in 1927. The time of its premiere was an era of technological advance and cultural upheaval in the film industry. The revolutionary switch to sound films and... Read more

I have never been compelled to use the word triumphant when writing about a film until now. It was the first word that came to mind at the conclusion of Danny Boyle‘s latest film, 127 Hours. Based on the story of Aron Ralston, the trapped hiker who cut off his own arm to save himself, both the story itself and Boyle’s adaptation are nothing less than triumphant. (more…) Read more

If you’re not familiar with the name Jack Rebney, then you might be familiar with the Winnebago Man. If this name doesn’t ring a bell, then maybe you’ve heard of The Angriest Man in the World.  I wasn’t familiar with the name or the titles until I read about the new documentary, Winnebago Man, which chronicles Jack Rebney’s rise to viral video infamy and the filmmaker’s search for him after he disappeared after filming the infamous Winnebago commercial in which... Read more

The first half of the final installment of the Harry Potter series, The Deathly Hallows: Part 1, opens today in theaters across the country. While many viewers, including myself, are bemoaning the delay of the series’ conclusion until July 2011, that the final book is divided into two films allows the filmmakers to flesh out important elements of the story that would otherwise go unaddressed in a single film. While I have not read the final book, it does feel,... Read more

Few contemporary works of fiction, especially those aimed at younger readers, have divided Christians quite as sharply as J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Some Christians view the books as harmless fantasy, no different form the works of C. S. Lewis or J. R. R. Tolkien. Others see them as poison that would steer believers away from the true faith toward wizardry and witchcraft. Oh that we could only cast such fantastical spells! Yet others argue for a more complex... Read more

Starting with Mystic River in 2001, Clint Eastwood has had a run of remarkable films that have all, in different ways, had death or loss as one of their major themes. His latest film, I believe, is a culmination of those films because in Hereafter he goes beyond death to speculate on the possibility of life after it. (more…) Read more
