Dear Lord, Hear my prayer for your priests in my life. I pray that they will persevere in their calling in the face of ridicule and hate for the sins of their brothers. I pray that they find strength in you in a world that devalues the purpose of their work, and often sees them as useless and archaic. Sweet Jesus help me remember to thank them for the offering of their lives to lead mine towards you. I am... Read more

I’ve never been much for growing roses. My gardens had always been more cottage style with plants growing close together in a riot of color, texture, and form. Roses simply didn’t work in my design. Besides, there were all those thorns to contend with, and I hate getting pricked in the garden (you may have read about that annoyance in Cultivating God’s Garden through Lent). It’s no secret that with an arthritic spine my gardening days had come to an... Read more

Writing about hardy mums in the spring may seem like an oxymoron. Let me explain. For years I’d listened to homeowners say what bad luck they had growing perennial chrysanthemums. They’d plant the big showy mums every fall and rarely found that they survived the winter and grew the following year. Tired of failing, they’d stopped planting them or only bought a couple of plants to toss into containers for fall interest. The issue of not being hardy has to... Read more

O Immaculate Virgin, help remove from the hearts of our holy women any reluctance to giving themselves fully to God. Keep them from being immersed in the things of earth. Teach them how pure their hearts ought to be, so that they will never refuse anything to the Lord, and will always be able to repeat with you their sweet, prompt fiat. Illumine their minds, then, with the light which emanates from your resplendent purity, so that no attachment, no... Read more

Weeds. Even in the small garden they are a bother. I yank them out and throw them onto the driveway, making a mess instead of tossing them in a bucket to be composted. Composting is a good thing, though. We take weeds and organic waste, and jumble it together to make a rich soil. This new material spread around plants gives nourishment for growth and fruitfulness. Light and water when added to the waste pile encourages microorganisms to break down... Read more

As we approach St. Catherine’s memorial, April 29, let us offer our prayers for her intercession to our Lord. O God, you are beauty and wisdom, mystery and love. Touch the hearts of your Sisters and Nuns to flame for you and for your Church through the prayer and example of St. Catherine of Siena. We ask this grace through Jesus the Christ, our Lord. Amen (Public domain image by artist Rutilio di Lorenzo Manetti (1571–1639), St. Catherine of Siena... Read more

This prayer comes from an old leaflet that is a rosary for priests. O Jesus, You are the Eternal High Priest. Because You are true God and true man, You are the only Mediator between God and man. Through You, the merciful Father gives man salvation and through You, man is led back to Him. You have established priests as Your collaborators to perpetuate in the Holy Mass, the Sacrifice of Your death on the Cross and to sanctify souls... Read more

Fresh produce from the garden is one of the simplest delights of summer. What’s not to like about plucking off and biting into a tomato, cucumber, or sugar snap peas still warm from the sun. Many of us do not have a yard large enough for a vegetable patch or time to volunteer at a community garden, but we still want home grown foods — and maybe more than enough to share. There is a solution to growing your own veggies in... Read more
