Friday, it finally came. One Pretty sure today is International Women’s Day—at least according to France Info. American Twitter seems not to have noticed. Maybe Americans have a different International Women’s Day than the rest of the world. To celebrate, I’m going to clean my house, because that’s what makes me the happiest. #sorrynotsorry Two Being a fluffy only partially liberated female, I did finally finish all sixty hours of Sherlock Holmes a week ago. So brilliant. Not sure how... Read more

We’ve been chattering about Lent for upwards of a week now, over the daily Luncheon table. It never occurred to me, years ago, when the first of the children began to talk, and, with less spectacular results, to listen, to say anything like, “It’s lent now. What wretched transgression are you going to give up you sinful little child?” Why would I do that? Children are basically adorable and their sins are, while totally irritating, generally charming. You correct them... Read more

Turns out I need to revise my plans for Lent and give up, on day one, binge watching Rachel Hollis videos. As usual, it’s the hair that’s so mesmerizing. I’m pretty sure that if I could have her hair I would be as amazing as she is. Oops, now I also need to give up envy. I can’t help being fascinated by this latest iteration, even though, as she herself says, the devil never has any new ideas, of self-empowered... Read more

Some kind but unknowing person wondered aloud to me why we have to eat pancakes today. Can’t you, if you have insisted on observing Lent, which is its own unnerving curiosity, just sort of drift into it without all the hassle of either making pancakes yourself or going to church where someone will make them for you? The answer, of course, is How On Earth Could You Suggest Such A Thing? Pancakes are essential. Although I hear some transgressive people... Read more

It is a snowy bitter day, as one might expect, so we’ve done up a podcast about lent, the release of Girl Stop Apologizing, what’s going on with the United Methodists, and what you should do if you want your institutional church to remain orthodox. It’s all you could possibly want for a Monday. Follow your dreams and listen to it. Here is the piece about Rachel Hollis. Here is something interesting. And here is something super cool. And something... Read more

Well, here we stand on the threshold of Lent, facing that dark day—Ash Wednesday—when evangelicals lob tweets back and forth about whether or not it is acceptable to observe the moment with the imposition of ashes. What you think about the matter is not quite as important as letting other people know. Let your theological feelings be known before men, that they may glorify your Father who is in heaven. But we’re not there yet. Today is about glory—the unveiled... Read more

Ah, Friday. We have crawled our way out of February and veritably into the somber arms of Lent. With that in mind (Lent I mean), today, though it is not the most sparkling subject, I would like to talk about blog commenting—particularly on this blog. If you have ever commented, or think you might like to, this post is for you. One I, basically, love all of you who have ever commented. I am delighted you take the trouble and... Read more

[This cat disapproves of your penguins.] Mr. Popper’s Penguins is the worst. I’m pretty sure I liked this book the first time the first child read it. I thought it was cute and fun. Who doesn’t want a shipment of penguins! Children’s imaginations are important! Look how cute the…oh never mind. By the third kid my enthusiasm was starting to wane. But now, by the sixth, the party is over. No. More. Penguins. Also, if you’re looking for a study... Read more

First up, I wanted to say, very sadly, that the publisher of my book has closed down, and that if you go over to Amazon to try to buy it, you will have to sift through a variety of used copies. I am grieved about this, of course, but am trying to stick my courage to the whatever kind of post that is, and do something about it, rather than taking it a Sign From God, which was my first... Read more

I tried really really hard not to get sucked in, but there is something deeply mesmerizing about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez cooking in her tiny kitchen, pontificating about politics and the end of the world. This is the best kind of social media experience. There she is—and how does she look so relaxed and amazing, because when I’m chopping sweet potatoes I look Nothing like that—appealing and yet commanding, and you can just click on and watch her, no matter what else... Read more
